Nurses Revalidation 2016

What is NMC Revalidation

The purpose of nurses revalidation is to improve public protection, ensuring nurses and midwives remain fit to practise throughout their careers.

In September 2013 the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) announced it was committed to implement revalidation of nurses and midwives by the end of 2015.

There are over 670,000 nurses and midwives on the NMC register, working across health, social care and the voluntary sector.  Almost 50% are employed within the NHS in England.

From January 2016 revalidation for all nurses and midwives will commence upon renewal of their registration with the NMC.

WHAT IS REVALIDATION?

Revalidation is a process for nurses and midwives practicing in the UK o prove they continue to remain fit to practise.

The proposed revalidation will enhance public protection and increase public confidence in nurses’ and midwives’ continued practise and their fitness to remain on the register

  • It is a process that the NMC will require all nurses and midwives to undertake every three years, in order to renew their registration.
  • Replaces the existing Prep standards as the way in which nurses and midwives demonstrate to the NMC that they continue to practise safely and effectively, and can remain on the register.
  • First registrants to revalidate will be those who are due to renew from April 2016.
  • Registrants must declare that they have met a number of requirements over the three-year period.
  • Every month, the NMC will select a sample of nurses and midwives to audit.

NMC piloted revalidation in a variety of settings across the UK in spring/summer 2015. Settings included:

  •  NHS Acute Hospitals
  •  Universities
  •  GP Practices
  •  BUPA
  •  Association of Occupational Health Nurse Practitioners
  •  British Association of Cosmetic Nurses
  • Public Health England
  • Unite the Union
  • Hallam Medical
  • Priory

Around 2,000 nurses completed revalidation.
