The Care Certificate

CareShield are at the forefront of training in the Health and Social Care sectors, and as such are committed to innovation. We are currently planning and developing a suite of new learning resources in order to support organisations implementing the Care Certificate in 2015. We are working very closely with the government and pilot organisations to design the best possible solution for the sector.

However, the legislation and frameworks regarding the Care Certificate are currently subject to change. We are expecting feedback on the Care Certificate pilot period and the final version of the assessment frameworks from Westminster at the end of January. We will then be working to ensure our products satisfy and exceed the new regulatory requirements.

What do we already know about The Care Certificate?

Comes in to force on 1st April 2015.

Required for Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) and Adult Social Care Workers (ASCW).

Health and Care sector employees who have already completed CIS and/or NMTS training are not required to complete the Care Certificate, but must be working to the standards outlined in the new assessment framework.

Must be completed within 12 weeks of employment. New employees are not permitted to work with service users unattended until the Care Certificate has been completed.

15 training modules to replace the Common Induction Standards and National Minimum Training Standards.

The Care Certificate combines underpinning knowledge with new competency assessment – demonstrating and evidencing skills, communication and techniques, rather than just having a theoretical understanding.

There will be no national record of who has completed the Care Certificate. Local or organisation-wide records must be kept of who has completed the Care Certificate and made available when necessary for inspection purposes.

Similarly there will be no national accreditation for the Care Certificate and there is no requirement for it to be validated by a third party (e.g. education institution or awarding body). However, employers may wish to gain quality assurance from an external source.

It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the assessment criteria of the Care Certificate have been met and evidenced to a satisfactory standard. More specifically it is the Registered Manager’s responsibility in Social Care settings and a named person’s responsibility in healthcare environments. These representatives will sign off a learner’s certificate as complete.

The Care Certificate is intended to be portable, meaning that employees will not be required to repeat the training if they move job role or to another organisation. However, the Care Certificate will not replace employer-specific induction, meaning induction training will still be necessary in a new role or environment.
